Gulf Shores Area Guide

A Local’s Guide from Tim & Martha — Your Hosts at The Beary Best

We’ve been coming to Gulf Shores long enough to know where the locals eat, which beach accesses are worth the walk, and which stretches of West Beach feel like the Gulf Coast the way it used to be — unhurried, unpretentious, and genuinely beautiful.

When we decided to invest in vacation property here, it wasn’t a spreadsheet decision. We fell in love with this place first, and the numbers came second. That’s still how we think about it — and it’s why we put together this guide. Not to point you toward the tourist traps, but to share the Gulf Shores we actually know and love.

Gulf Shores sits at a unique spot on the Alabama Gulf Coast — flanked by the Gulf of Mexico to the south and Little Lagoon to the north, with miles of sugar-white sand beaches that rival anything Florida has to offer at a fraction of the attitude. The West Beach corridor where both of our cottages are located has a throwback beach town feel that’s increasingly rare on the Gulf Coast. Two-lane roads, locally owned restaurants, neighborhood seafood markets, and beach access at the end of nearly every cross street. It’s the kind of place where you slow down whether you planned to or not.

The area has grown considerably in recent years — there’s no shortage of things to do, places to eat, and ways to spend a beach week. But the heart of what makes Gulf Shores special hasn’t changed: the water is warm, the pace is slow, and the people are genuinely friendly.

Whether this is your first trip to Gulf Shores or your fifteenth, we hope this guide helps you find your favorites — the restaurant you’ll talk about on the drive home, the fishing spot the kids will beg to go back to, the sunset view that stops you mid-sentence.

That’s what Gulf Shores does. And we’re glad you’re here to experience it.

🍽️ Where to Eat

Gulf Shores has evolved into a genuine food destination — not just a “grab some fried shrimp and call it a day” kind of place, though there’s nothing wrong with that either. Here’s where we send our guests.

Breakfast & Casual

Sunliner Diner A Gulf Shores institution and one of the most fun breakfast spots on the coast. The 1950s retro theme is done right — colorful milkshakes, a classic car you can actually dine inside, and a menu that goes well beyond typical diner fare. Great for families and a guaranteed hit with kids. Don’t skip the milkshakes even if it’s 8am. You’re on vacation.

Kitty’s If you’re craving honest Southern cooking — country fried steak, biscuits and gravy, fried green tomatoes, and eggs Benedict done right — Kitty’s is your spot. They serve breakfast all day alongside a solid lunch menu, and the atmosphere is warm and no-frills in the best possible way. This is the place you’ll wish you had in your own neighborhood back home.

Seafood — Because That’s Why You’re Here

DeSoto’s Seafood Kitchen A beloved local staple and one of those places where you understand immediately why it’s been packed for years. Fresh seafood, generous portions, home-style sides, and prices that won’t make you wince. The tuna dip and gumbo are worth starting with. The fried shrimp plate with mac and cheese is legendary. Don’t overthink it — just go.

The Original Oyster House Established in 1983 and still earning it. Waterfront views, a fresh daily salad bar, handcrafted cocktails, and one of the best raw oyster programs on the Alabama coast. The kids’ menu is solid, and there’s a playground to burn off energy before the drive back. Military Mondays offer special discounts — worth knowing.

LuLu’s Gulf Shores Yes, it’s owned by Jimmy Buffett’s sister. Yes, it lives up to the hype — but don’t let the celebrity connection fool you into thinking it’s all gimmick. The food is genuinely good, the waterfront setting is beautiful, and for families, it’s practically a destination unto itself. Kids get access to a climbing structure, sand play area, arcade, face painting, and more. Come hungry, come early, and plan to stay a while.

The Hangout One of the most iconic spots in Gulf Shores, right on the beach. Live music every weekend, an outdoor bar, fire pit, giant sandboxes, and a menu built around fresh, locally sourced seafood. It gets busy during peak season — that’s not a reason to avoid it, it’s a reason to go in the morning or late afternoon.

Fish River Grill Don’t let the self-proclaimed “funky junky redneck joint” description put you off — this place is the real deal. Famous for Cajun gator bites, swamp soup, and some of the best burgers in Baldwin County. It’s the kind of spot that becomes a tradition once you try it.

The Catch A newer addition that’s earned its place quickly. Built around fresh wild-caught Gulf shrimp and seafood, their signature boils are a full Gulf Coast feast — crab legs, Gulf shrimp, mussels, Conecuh sausage, corn, and red potatoes tossed in house-made garlic butter sauce. The Bayou Crawfish Pasta and Southern-style crab cakes are guest favorites. Full bar with frozen daiquiris. Great for groups.

Bahama Bob’s The Real Thing! Where you find the very best of everything you come to the beach for in one place. Always remember, the lower the latitude, the better the attitude!

For a Nicer Night Out

Voyagers Discover authentic Gulf Coast cuisine amidst an intimate setting and panoramic Gulf views while dining at Voyagers.

Big Fish Restaurant (Orange Beach) When the group wants to do something a little more elevated, Big Fish in Orange Beach delivers. Elegant but relaxed, with a menu of fresh seafood, sushi, and steaks. Open for dinner only. Worth the short drive.

Local Tips Worth Knowing

  • The Bushwacker is the iconic Gulf Shores cocktail — a boozy milkshake made with rum, coffee liqueur, crème de cacao, and coconut cream. Every spot claims to have the best one. Consider it your personal research project for the week.
  • The National Shrimp Festival happens every October and draws over 200,000 people. If you’re visiting in the fall, plan around it — it’s a genuine Gulf Coast tradition.
  • Coastal Alabama Farmers & Fishermens Market is open every Saturday, rain or shine. Fresh local produce, seafood, and Gulf Coast goods. Worth a morning visit if you’re cooking at the cottage.
  • Most restaurants don’t take reservations for large groups — if you’re coming with 10 or more, aim for before or after the dinner rush to avoid a long wait.

🏖️ Beach Access

The sugar-white sand beaches of Gulf Shores are the main event, and from our West Beach properties, you’ve got excellent access options in every direction.

Your Doorstep Access

  • The Beary Best Beach House (205 W 13th St): Beach access is at the end of 13th Street, with a pedestrian crosswalk and a boardwalk running alongside Little Lagoon Pass Park and Pier. One block. You’ll be there before the sunscreen soaks in.
  • Mi Vida Beach House (115 W 10th St): Directly across the street from 10th Street Public Beach Access. It doesn’t get more convenient than this.

Little Lagoon The lagoon access points at the end of every cross street on West Beach are a genuinely underrated part of the experience. Calmer water than the Gulf, ideal for young kids, kayaking, paddleboarding, crabbing, and flounder gigging. Little Lagoon Pass Park and Pier is a short walk and a favorite local fishing and wildlife-watching spot.

Gulf State Park Beach One of the finest public beaches on the Alabama coast, with a pavilion that has air-conditioned restrooms, private showers, and a family picnic area. The park itself has over 6,000 acres and far more to offer than just beach access — see the Outdoor Activities section below.

Gulf Shores Public Beach (Gulf Place) The main public beach hub on East Beach, with paid parking lots adjacent to the sand. Convenient and well-maintained, with concessions and rentals nearby. Gets busy in peak season — West Beach tends to be quieter and less crowded.

Fort Morgan Beach (22 miles west) The quieter, more secluded end of the peninsula. Worth a day trip if you want to feel like you have the beach almost to yourself. Pet-friendly, which Gulf Shores Public Beach is not.

Beach Flag System — Know Before You Go Gulf Shores flies colored flags to indicate water conditions. Check the flags every day before entering the water — conditions can change quickly.

  • 🟢 Green — Low hazard, calm conditions
  • 🟡 Yellow — Medium hazard, moderate surf/current
  • 🔴 Red — High hazard, strong surf or current — swim with caution
  • 🔴🔴 Double Red — Water closed to swimming
  • 🟣 Purple — Dangerous marine life present (jellyfish, etc.)

🎣 Fishing

Gulf Shores is a serious fishing destination — not just a backdrop for fishing. Whether you’re a lifelong angler or putting a rod in a kid’s hands for the first time, there are options for every level.

Gulf State Park Fishing Pier The longest fishing pier in the Gulf of Mexico — over 2,000 feet of rail space. You can purchase a daily fishing license for around $9 (kids 11 and under fish free with an adult), and the pier has a bait shop on site. If you’re not fishing, a walking pass lets you stroll out over the Gulf to watch for sharks, dolphins, and other marine life. One of the best free-ish activities on the coast.

Little Lagoon — Right Outside Your Door Shore fishing, crabbing, and flounder gigging are all popular on Little Lagoon. The calmer water makes it ideal for new anglers and kids. The lagoon is productive year-round but especially active in the warmer months. Ask locally about crabbing gear rentals if you want to make an afternoon of it.

Fort Morgan Pier Right next to the entrance to Historic Fort Morgan, this pier is a great spot for birdwatching, marine life observation, and fishing in a far less crowded setting than the State Park Pier.

Deep-Sea Fishing Charters (Orange Beach) For serious anglers, Orange Beach is home to one of the largest charter fishing fleets on the Gulf Coast. Half-day and full-day trips are available for grouper, amberjack, red snapper (in season), and more. Book in advance during peak summer months — the best boats fill up fast. The Orange Beach Billfish Classic, now in its 48th year, is one of the most prestigious big game tournaments on the coast if you happen to be visiting around Memorial Day weekend. Our personal favorite is Off The Hook Fishing Charter out of Fort Morgan.

What to Expect to Catch by Season

  • Spring: Flounder, speckled trout, redfish
  • Summer: Red snapper, grouper, amberjack (offshore), pompano and sheepshead (surf)
  • Fall: Flounder, Spanish mackerel, redfish — arguably the best overall fishing season
  • Winter: Sheepshead, black drum — the crowds thin out and the fishing stays good

🌊 Water Activities

If fishing isn’t your thing, the Gulf and Little Lagoon offer no shortage of ways to get wet.

Kayaking & Paddleboarding Little Lagoon is ideal for both — calm, protected water with wildlife around every bend. Several rental outfitters operate on West Beach. Gulf State Park also offers kayak rentals on Lake Shelby for a freshwater paddling experience surrounded by coastal forest.

Dolphin Cruises Dolphin sightings are common in the waters around Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, and boat tour operators run regular cruises specifically for wildlife viewing. For something more adventurous and intimate, Wild Native Tours offers a Dolphin & Wildlife Kayak Experience that puts you right at water level. Frequently described as unforgettable — book in advance.

Parasailing For the thrill seekers in the group — or anyone who wants to see the entire Gulf Coast from 500 feet in the air. Multiple operators in Orange Beach. Book ahead during summer. If you happen to be visiting when the Blue Angels are practicing at Pensacola Naval Air Station (most weekdays spring through fall), the view from a parasail is uniquely spectacular.

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving The Gulf’s clear water and artificial reef system make for surprisingly good diving. Day trips to offshore reefs and sunken ships operate out of Orange Beach. If no one in your group is certified, certification courses are available during your stay.

Waterville USA (Gulf Shores) The area’s waterpark — a full-day family option with rides, slides, and wave pools. Good rainy-weather alternative when the Gulf isn’t cooperating.

Adventures on Zama I (Gulf Shores) Eco-Adventures, Nearshore and Offshore Fishing Charters, Touring, Custom Cruises and more!

🦎 Outdoor Adventures & Nature

Gulf Shores has a natural side that catches a lot of visitors off guard — in the best way.

Gulf State Park Over 6,000 acres encompassing beaches, dune lakes, coastal forest, and freshwater lakes. This is one of the premier state parks in the Southeast and worthy of at least one dedicated day during your stay. Highlights include:

  • Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail — 14 miles of multi-use trails through diverse coastal ecosystems. Free bike-sharing available. Look for the butterfly garden and Boulder Park (a hit with climbing kids).
  • Lake Shelby — a beautiful freshwater lake in the heart of the park, perfect for kayaking and wildlife viewing.
  • Gulf State Park Nature Center — a living museum with snakes, gators, hawks, turtles, and guided nature talks. Free. Don’t skip it.
  • Camping — if anyone in your group wants to extend the adventure, the park’s campgrounds are among the best in Alabama.
  • Segway Tours — a fun way to cover more ground with less effort. Available through the park.

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge (Fort Morgan Peninsula) One of the most ecologically significant spots on the Alabama Gulf Coast — a crucial habitat for migratory songbirds, sea turtles, and wildlife of all kinds. Peaceful, uncrowded, and a completely different experience from the beach scene. Excellent birdwatching in spring and fall migration seasons.

Little Lagoon Pass Park & Pier Right near our properties on West Beach — a local gem that rarely makes the tourist lists. The point where Little Lagoon meets the Gulf of Mexico. Great for fishing, kayaking, wildlife observation, and one of the better sunset spots on the coast. Worth a morning or evening visit any day of the week.

Fort Morgan Historic Site (22 miles west) A Third System masonry Civil War fort built between 1819 and 1833. Fascinating for history buffs and surprisingly engaging for kids. Tours available. Combine with a trip to Fort Morgan Beach for a full day on the western peninsula. The ferry from Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island is a bonus adventure — the Alabama Aquarium on Dauphin Island is worth the crossing.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Favorites

Gulf Shores has earned its reputation as one of the best family beach destinations in the South. Here’s what families consistently love most.

Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo A 25-acre accredited zoo that consistently earns some of the highest visitor ratings on the coast. Animal encounters are a highlight — you can get hands-on with more species than you’d expect. Military and senior discounts available. Budget a half-day minimum.

The Wharf (Orange Beach) An entertainment district with waterfront dining, shopping, live concerts, and the famous 112-foot Ferris wheel — one of the best views on the Gulf Coast for $8 a person. The SPECTRA Laser Light Show runs nightly during summer. The Wharf Amphitheater hosts major concerts throughout the season — check the calendar before your trip.

Adventure Island / The Track Go-karts, indoor black-light mini golf, bumper boats, kiddie rides, and an arcade. The kind of place that becomes the unexpected highlight of the trip for the 8–14 crowd.

Park at OWA (Foley) A full amusement park about 10 miles north of the beach with roller coasters and rides for thrill seekers. Good rainy-day option or a fun half-day when the beach needs a break.

Tanger Outlets (Foley) 40+ retailers, a carousel, and a food court. Practically mandatory if anyone in your group wants to shop. About 10 miles north of the beach — easy half-morning trip.

The Yard Milkshake Bar Save room. These are not ordinary milkshakes. The Yard is famous for outrageous, over-the-top creations that are as much Instagram moment as dessert. Kids lose their minds. Adults aren’t far behind. Multiple locations — check hours.

🌅 Seasonal Tips

Spring (March–May) Our personal favorite time to visit. The weather is beautiful, the water is warming up, the crowds haven’t arrived yet, and prices are more reasonable. Spring is excellent for fishing, hiking Gulf State Park, and enjoying the restaurants without a wait. The Hangout Music Festival typically happens in May — a major draw for music fans.

Summer (June–August) Peak season. The water is warm, the beaches are packed, and the energy is high. Book restaurants ahead of time where possible, hit the beach early in the morning to claim your spot, and take afternoon breaks from the heat. The Blue Angels practice schedule at Pensacola Naval Air Station is publicly available — plan a beach day around it for a free airshow.

Fall (September–November) Gulf Shores’ best-kept secret. The water stays warm well into October, the crowds thin dramatically, and the fishing reaches its peak. Fall is also prime season for the National Shrimp Festival (October) and some of the best birding of the year at Bon Secour. Locals love this time of year for good reason.

Winter (December–February) Mild temperatures (highs in the 60s), quiet beaches, uncrowded restaurants, and significantly lower rental rates. Not swimming weather for most guests, but ideal for fishing, hiking, exploring Fort Morgan, and anyone who wants Gulf Shores to themselves. Almost all restaurants stay open year-round.
